This year's Thanksgiving was very low key. Halloween is just making its way to Shanghai, but Thanksgiving is non-existent. Yang had to work all day while Thursday was just the start of my two day weekend. Thursday was day 2 of nonstop rain so I spent my time at home cleaning, skyping with my family, and watching old Thanksgiving episodes of How I Met Your Mother. Earlier in the week, one of my American coworkers talked of his plans to buy a pre-cooked turkey and getting together with a bunch of friends. But for 1000RMB, I'd just as soon go to a nice restaurant to celebrate with my boyfriend and spend 1/5 of that. So that's what we did. After Yang got off work, we went to South Beauty to celebrate. Neither of us knew where we could find a reasonably priced turkey since it's a bit of a rarity (any of my friends, please feel free to correct me on this). The food was delicious in case you can't tell by the picture. Fried noodles, pan fried dumplings, some sort of chicken dish, shrimp with peas and corn, and a beef dish is what we ended up ordering. When we got back to the apartment, Yang and I watched A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. I was disappointed that I couldn't celebrate with my family for the first time in my life (or watch The Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade), but overall it was a good day.
Now, anyone that knows me, knows I love Black Friday and since I couldn't partake of it this year, I decided to do a little shopping on Friday anyway (despite this being day 3 of rain). Before you ask, no the Chinese do not have Black Friday filled with sales and crazy people. I went shopping at a decent hour in a store with no more than thirty other people in the whole place. I know. Lame. I didn't check with the Chinese Wal-Mart to see if they did anything, but I'm going to assume no.
I also got the chance to hang out with a coworker for a couple of hours as we tried to find her some boots. We failed miserably. Apparently it's too tall an order to want knee-high boots for a size 8 or bigger foot with no heel for $150 or less. I can tell I'm going to have fun finding shoes here. Ugh. Oh well. Starbucks makes everything better. I found out that my coworker had never been to Starbucks before so I bought her a drink and she insisted on buying me a muffin. They already had their Christmas decorations up. It was a little piece of home half way around the world. :)
I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving/Black Friday! Let the Christmas decorating and music listening commence!
